George's
story (Full story)
George Sim* (not
his real name) was a 49 years old Financial Manager. As he was fast approaching
the prime age of 50 years, he found himself being retrenched. A young graduate
who was barely 3 years in the industry replaced his position.
George had been
working in the company since he graduated. After being so loyal to the company
for 25 years, George was never prepared for a career change.
He was at a loss
and at his wit’s end. He had a family of 4 to support and his 2 children still
had a few years before joining the workforce.
WHAT SHOULD GEORGE
DO?
You may be like
George. It is unfortunate to face retrenchment at the age of 49. It may be
difficult for you to get a job as companies employ younger candidates. You feel
tired of sending so many resumes when few companies get back to you for a job
placement.
FRET not. SPEC is
here to help with your employment needs.
SPEC focuses on
helping members become more employable by providing them with knowledge and
skills to upgrade themselves. Other than permanent jobs, we source for
opportunities that come in the form of self-employment, free-lance and interim
management job opportunities.
We organize
monthly networking sessions, which allow
our members to keep themselves updated about the latest job markets and career
trends. SPEC also participates in career fairs, which allow our members to be
aware of current job openings and discover more about their job interests.
Our upcoming
events also include a coaching clinic, which upgrades and brushes up the
functional skills of each individual. Our coaches introduce objective
perspectives and offers input to individuals to enhance their performance at
work.
Recently, SPEC has
introduced PrimePlus, which aims to find
employment for PMETs (Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians) who
are 49 years old and above.
With the
introduction of INTERIM MANAGEMENT, your
unemployment woes are not here to stay. Companies need managers like YOU
who have the experience and capability to handle projects on your own. By your
track record, you have proven to have successfully managed teams with results.
Companies who have a shortage of middle management staff can hire you on an
interim basis where they pay you for the projects that you handle in their
companies.
Although the
project will be on a temporary basis, it allows you to use your time wisely and
effectively and not let your existing talents and experience go to waste.
50 is never an age
too old for work. Learning never stops at 50. With SPEC, you will find yourself
doing something productive in the prime years of your life, like George who has
managed to find a job through JobCentre@ SPEC.
